I received my Ph.D. in 2006 from Columbia University, under the training of E. Tory Higgins, and came directly to MSU. I study social cognition: how we think about other people and groups. See the research page for a description of research projects.

Undergraduate Assistants

The education and training of undergraduate research assistants is a priority for the lab. RAs experience every stage of the research process, from experimental design through data analysis and manuscript preparation. I also assist RAs with their graduate school applications and career choices.
Students who have been an RA for several semesters have the opportunity to carry out their own experiments in the lab.
I am grateful to have a history of outstanding RAs who have been engaged members of the lab. Click here to view a partial history of the lab. (If you don't see your name, email me to update the list!)

If you are responsible, motivated, and interested in gaining research experience, email to find out if any positions are available in the lab.

McNair/SROP students engage in an intensive graduate school preparation program which involves planning and carrying out their own research study. The program prepares first-generation, low-income, and minority students for successful graduate education. Past McNair/SROP students include: Pero Dagbovie (2018-2019, 1st Place Poster Winner at UURAF, two-time PURI award recipient), Brianna Benjamin (2017), Romulus Castelo (2016), Matthew Bolton (2016), Megan Covington (2013), and Shayla Thrash (2008-2010). See here for some comments on SROP.

I encourage students to conduct research for honors projects or simply as independent research. Past students conducting such work include: Srihita Veeramachaneni and Ryan Clare (1st Place Poster Winners at UURAF), Valerie Kemp (2017-2018, PURI Award Winner and two-time 1st Place Poster Winner at UURAF), Thalia Maronto (2017-2018, Honors College Fund Winner), Aubrey Stechschulte (2017, PURI Award Winner), Lucas Odom (2015-2017), and Christian Kotoye (2015-2017).

I have also mentored a number of Professorial Assistants over the years, including: Sara Fan (2020-2021), Erin Brooks (PURI Award Recipient, 2019), Caitlin Patton (2019-2020), Elizabeth Litwin (2019-2020), Carolyn Miner (2017-2019), Trevor Tress (2015-2019), Lauren Kafi Crymes (2017-2018), James Doman (2015-2016), Jessica Chan (2012-2016), Ben Caldwell (2012-2016), and Zack Favreau (2013-2015).

The lab was also a member of the Integrative Biology of Social Behaviors NSF summer training program. This summer program provides 10 weeks of research experience in laboratories studying biology and social interaction. I was fortunate to have two outstanding IBSB scholars in the lab: Chelsea Osuji (2015) and Erica Ross (2014).
